The Eagle

Did you see him?
Did you see the Eagle?
This time, in the Woods?
Looking, up the trunk, to the high top
Of the tree,
Did you see him in his nest?

Yes! I saw him looking down at me.
He glanced and in a flash, leapt up,
And began the deep beat of wings.

Beating harder.
Beating deeper.
Beating farther.
Beating higher.

The Great Bird rose
And began again
The ebb and flow of rise and return
To hunt and to rest
Double runs between prey and nest
Day after day
Night after night
Birth after birth
Flight after flight
The Eagle, ever watches,
From the top of the world.

He sees the fox that ate the mouse that ate the orange that made the seed that became the tree that bore the fruit.
The fruit that glows
Bright shining as the Sun,
Sinking in the West
And rising, the Eagle,
Beating deep,
Ever watches,
Double running from prey to nest.

Did you see him?
Did you see the Eagle?
No.
But I can tell you,
He did see me.
