Carefully Cultivating Your Mind Garden – DBS Podcast 008
Thanks Rob Bell, You are Awesome!
At the start of the 2020 Covid19 Pandemic, I sat down on a Zoom call with Rob Bell.
He and two other nice folks talked about dreams, ideas and personal roadblocks. Rob helped shed some light on all that.
Three years later, I’m now a coach. At the time of our call, I had no idea my life was going in that direction.
It just goes to show you…be open to the next possibility in your life and it can happen.
Spaceships and Other Worlds
I’ve just finished Rob’s latest novel, Where’d You Park Your Spaceship?. It’s a whimsically fun read that gently aligns you with some deep truths.
The book is about futuristic living, covering big letter topics like: Grief, History, Culture, Relationships, and finding Joy in the midst of a crazy busy life.
This is the first in a new series “Thanks, You Are Awesome”.

Episode Transcript
Hey folks, welcome to The David Bourne podcast, the David Bourne show. Today’s episode is about Rob Bell, it’s a thank you to Rob Bell. And I recorded it in my backyard, because there’s some significance to that, if you listen, you’ll hear the significance of what you could find in your backyard, what’s growing in your backyard, that you could tend to, to turn into something awesome. Check it out.
00:38
So I’m in my backyard. I’m recording a thank you. Part, one of a thank you series of recordings I’m making to show the gratitude that I have to some folks who have inspired me along the way. And this one’s happening in my backyard.
01:04
Because the backyard is an important spot for this particular recording for a few reasons. So this one goes out to Rob Bell, who is a Gosh, he’s hard to explain. author, artist, musician podcaster. Minister, former preacher, thinker.
01:34
Yeah, I mean, that’s, that’s what I think of when I want to think of Rob Bell. And the reason I’m in my backyard making this recording, which believe me is challenging, because there’s always a distraction of some kind, sometimes good, sometimes not so good.
01:52
But the reason I’m in the backyard is because at the beginning of the pandemic, call it that. Anyway, spring, early summer of 2020. I hopped on a call with Rob, who was sitting in his backyard, it was a zoom call with two other people, myself and Rob.
02:15
And the point of it was to talk about what we were creating and trying to create. The three of us were at a point where we thought it’d be good to talk to somebody about this idea and maybe figure out why we weren’t moving forward, or at least that’s what I was feeling at the time.
02:39
And so it occurred to me last week, I was listening to one of Rob’s latest podcasts, and he was talking about how he’s still sitting down with people. And I thought this sounds a lot like coaching, which more on that in a minute.
02:58
But it made me remember our recording, and it made me remember something that he said, and I had forgotten that Rob said this. Maybe it’s something he says often maybe he just said in this recording, I’m not sure. But what he said was kind of metaphorically go out in your backyard. Imagine that you’re looking out.
03:22
And there’s something growing back there. And you’re curious about what it is. It’s something that you would be excited to see growing. And to use this as a metaphor for the ideas that occur to us that come to us that that we dream up. And the point of that was to say, you know, this is your backyard.
03:51
And this is a place that you can tend to kind of like a gardener, which I just started reading Rob’s book, and he’s got a new novel. I don’t think it’s his first novel, but it’s kind of a big novel. He’s been talking about it in the podcast, and in the people there. In this sort of futuristic world.
04:13
They all have gardens, and they all just can’t understand why people wouldn’t have a garden. And that seems like a very human thing that we would all have gardens yet most of us don’t know. But I’m very lucky to have this backyard and I’m so grateful to be in it today now on this beautiful fall day. But also, every day. I mean, I’m out here just about every day I meditate here. And that that that idea he planted back in 2020.
04:51
I’m looking back on that and I’m realizing sometimes you know we don’t remember things but they still make an impression and that, at the time made an impression on me when he said that, you know, think about what’s growing in your backyard, because at the time, I didn’t know what was growing in my backyard.
05:09
Pretty soon after that, though, just a few months later, I knew what it was. And I started to take seriously this idea that I might want to be a coach, and help people, you know, listen to them, talk through something in and have that something grow into something else, or to you know, maybe they’ve, they’re stuck and talking to somebody about that.
05:36
And having a sympathetic ear or someone who can, who can point out some limiting beliefs. That became something that I realized was really important to me.
05:46
I did a podcast about that, about how much this forest when I say my backyard, really what I’m looking at is National Forest, it’s part of the Blue Ridge Parkway, National Park Service property. I’m very grateful and lucky and blessed and all the good things that I get to live next door to it, that in fact, that had been a dream of mine.
06:09
For decades, like wow, wouldn’t it be cool to live next to a piece of public land so that it would never be built on and there would always be a forest there and, and circumstances happen that that was something that happened in my life, which was amazing. So I just wanted to come in the backyard for a few minutes. Because this place is meant so much to me.
06:36
And I wanted to say to Rob, thank you. Thanks for doing what you’re doing. And I’m looking forward to now listening to your book, I just saw yesterday that you’re going to be now that you have released an audio version of your book, which is so appropriate, because so much of the ideas I’ve gotten from you, Rob are are ideas that I got through your podcast or through one of your audio series, you sell books and their their their audio series.
07:12
And so it just seemed appropriate, and it seemed appropriate that I would come in my backyard to do this recording, I was hoping I would hear some of my favorite birds. I heard them earlier when I was setting up the gear, the little white crested nut hatch, which is this cutest little thing. It’s bright blue and white.
07:32
And and just as often you find it and it’s walking upside down, down a tree trunk. And they sound like a little duck. Maybe I can share some of that recording that I recorded earlier. But gosh, it’s so quiet right now.
07:51
I’m just grateful to have a few quiet moments out here. So I’m going to end this recording before it gets. You know, for a jet takes off, or a neighbor walks by or I don’t know I’ve seen deer in this yard. I’ve seen turkeys I’ve seen a bear. I’ve seen a fox. A lot of interesting stuff has come through this backyard.
08:20
So wherever you are, I hope that you have a back backyard, whether it’s real or metaphorical, a place that you can go and contemplate and ask yourself what’s growing out there? Is there something I can sense that’s coming up out of the ground? That’s becoming something new, that might take me in a new direction and take my life in a whole new way and make it into something amazing and something exciting?
08:48
I hope so. Give yourself some time to ask that question. Go and listen to some Rob Bell books, podcasts. There’s 300 and something of them. They’re all great.
08:59
And but make sure you gave yourself some time to to ask that question because it’s a good one. All right, cheers. You can find more at David bourne.com where I do things like this and hope to see you there.
